Scenic Attractions - Shakespeare Cliff: A spectacular volcanic ash landform, seen from the Whitianga self-catering holiday home by the beach and ocean.
Volcanic ash, amazingly sculpted by ocean, wind and rain, makes Shakespeare Cliff a prominent geologic feature from both land and sea.
During a historic voyage to Mercury Bay in 1769, Captain Cook observed the transit of planet Mercury across the face of the sun, from the summit of Shakespeare Cliff. This rare transit was recently repeated in June 2004.
There is road access to the summit of Shakespeare and a parking area. You can also walk there via various tracks.
The view from the top is breathtaking, giving an idea of the huge area of Mercury Bay with its many islands and beaches.
